What to do when your car
breaks down on the highway

On the highway everything happens at high speed, so a breakdown becomes dangerous in seconds. Here's what to do, in order.

Pull onto the hard shoulder

If you can still control the car, take it as far right as possible, onto the hard shoulder, well away from traffic. Never stop in the running lanes if you have another option.

Get out on the side away from traffic

Turn on the hazards, put on your reflective vest and leave the car through the door toward the barrier, not toward the carriageway. Wait behind the barrier, not next to the car.

The car can be fixed. You can't. Get yourself safe first.

Signal and call

Place the warning triangle at the required distance behind you and call for help. State the exact kilometer and the direction of travel, so we come straight to you.
