car accident? What to do

An accident catches you off guard and it's hard to think clearly. A few simple steps, though, protect your rights, at the scene and after.

At the scene

Make sure no one is injured and call for help if needed. If there are casualties, call 112 and don't move the vehicles. For minor damage, fill in the amicable accident report with the other driver.

Document everything

Photograph the vehicles, their positions, the plates and the street. Note the witnesses' details. This evidence weighs heavily later, in a compensation claim or in court.

What you don't document at the scene is almost impossible to prove afterward.

Compensation and a lawyer

Claim compensation from the at-fault driver's insurer. If it's refused or too small, or if there is a criminal case, a lawyer can help you obtain what you are owed.
