A child's first
visit to the dentist
A child's first relationship with the dentist matters for a lifetime. Here's how to start on the right foot.
When is the moment
The first visit is recommended early, around age one or when the first teeth appear. Not for treatment, but so the little one gets used to the place and the doctor, in a relaxed atmosphere.
How to prepare them
It helps most if the parent is calm and doesn't use words like "pain" or "injection". Present the visit as play, an adventure, not something to fear.
A child isn't born afraid of the dentist. They learn it from us, the adults. That's why the first visit matters so much.
What we do
At the pediatric check-up we play, show them the instruments and let them get used to it. The rest we do gently and patiently.
