Check the reviews and real work

Don't stop at portfolio photos. Ask for examples from entire events and read reviews from real couples, not just testimonials on the website.

Ask about the contract and backups

A serious vendor works with a contract and has a plan B if something comes up. Ask what happens in case of illness or a breakdown, before, not on the day.

If a vendor avoids putting things in writing, that is a sign in itself.
